How many chess vs computer levels are there?
Five AI levels: Beginner, Casual, Club, Strong, and Master. Higher levels search deeper with less randomness so strength is clearly visible, and the engine never plays illegal moves.
How do I learn chess rules interactively?
Open Learn mode for coach-led lessons on piece moves, checks, checkmate, stalemate, castling, en passant, and promotion, plus a guided first game. For advanced tactical puzzles, try Chess Tactics on GamingLab.
How does play-with-friends multiplayer work?
Create a room, share the code or link, and your friend joins. Moves are validated on the server. You can also use Quick match to pair with another waiting player.
Does Chess Arena support castling and en passant?
Yes. Full FIDE rules are enforced: both castling sides when rights allow, en passant on the immediate reply, promotion to queen/rook/bishop/knight, check/checkmate/stalemate, and basic insufficient-material draws.
What optional tools does Chess Arena AI mode offer?
Versus AI you get up to 3 hints per game, optional takebacks, and an optional 5-minute rapid clock per side (toggle off for casual). Master AI searches depth 4 with a ~700ms budget.
How does Chess Arena online play sync?
Friends rooms use a 6-character share code; moves validate on the server with ~1s polling sync. Quick match pairs waiting players into a room the same way. No signup required.
Can I play Black vs the computer, and how many hints or takebacks do I get?
Versus AI you always play White. Each AI game starts with 3 hints (Club-strength search) and 2 takebacks; hints and takebacks are AI-only, not friends or Quick match. The clock defaults to 5 minutes per side (casual); Rapid is 10 minutes; you can turn the clock off.
Can I resign or offer a draw in Chess Arena?
Yes. You can use the Resign button to end any game, and in friends rooms you can offer a draw to the other player. Checkmate, stalemate, and insufficient material are always detected automatically, so draws and checkmates never need manual setup.
