Strategy games online in the browser

If you want to play strategy games online in your browser against the computer โ€” no downloads, no accounts โ€” this guide is your starting point. All six games below open in seconds: you move, the machine answers, and every match lasts as long as you like.

Unlike our free browser strategy games guide, which covers puzzles and solitaires, this one is duels only: classic boards where every decision draws a reply from the other side.

1. Chess: the full game, lessons included

Play now: Chess Arena vs AI

Real chess on the classic 8ร—8 board with the complete rule set: castling, en passant, pawn promotion, and endings by checkmate or stalemate. You play White, moving by tapping or clicking a piece and its destination.

The engine offers 5 AI levels, from Beginner to Master, plus step-by-step lessons, games with friends, and online matchmaking.

Tip: start at Beginner and finish the castling and promotion lessons before stepping up โ€” basic tactical mistakes are the most expensive ones.

2. Checkers: forced captures and game-deciding kings

Play now: Checkers Pro vs AI

An 8ร—8 board with 12 pieces per side on the dark squares. You play black, at the bottom, and move first. Men step diagonally forward and capture by jumping: when a capture is available, it is mandatory. Reaching the far row crowns a king, which moves diagonally in every direction. The AI plays red across three difficulties.

Tip: count the forced captures before every move โ€” most beginners lose because their "safe" move handed the rival a double jump.

3. Battleship: hide your fleet well and hunt theirs

Play now: Battleship vs AI

Each side hides 5 ships on a 10ร—10 grid: Carrier (5), Battleship (4), Cruiser (3), Submarine (3), Destroyer (2). Ships cannot touch, not even diagonally; rotate them or use auto-place, then trade shots until one fleet is sunk.

Every hit scores 50 points, sinkings score 100 to 500 by size, and winning adds 1,000 โ€” all multiplied by difficulty (ร—1/ร—2/ร—3). The AI fires randomly on easy, hunts around hits on medium, and computes a probability map on hard.

Tip: spread your fleet across the grid instead of bunching it in one corner โ€” on hard, the AI punishes any dense cluster.

4. Classic Go: territory and captures on 9ร—9

Play now: Classic Go vs AI

Stones go on the intersections of a 9ร—9 board. You play Black and move first; the machine is White. A group with no liberties is captured and removed, and the previous position may not repeat immediately. You may pass any time: two consecutive passes end the game, and the higher count of territory plus captures wins, with White getting 6.5 compensation points.

Tip: take the corners first and keep your stones connected โ€” isolated central groups fall first.

5. Connect Four: line up four before the machine does

Play now: Connect Four vs AI

A 7-column, 6-row grid: tap a column, the disc drops to the lowest free cell, and the first side with 4 in a row โ€” horizontal, vertical, or diagonal โ€” wins. You start every match. The AI plays loose on easy, blocks and builds on medium, and searches with minimax on hard.

Tip: play the center column whenever you can โ€” it opens more winning lines than any side column.

6. Mastermind: crack the computer's secret code

Play now: Mastermind vs AI

The computer sets a secret 4-peg code, colors may repeat, and after each guess you get black pegs for exact hits and white pegs for right colors in wrong slots. Difficulty sets the terms: 6 colors and 12 guesses on easy, 7 and 10 on medium, 8 colors with 8 guesses on hard.

Tip: spend your first two guesses testing different colors โ€” learning which colors exist beats an early lucky hit.

How to pick your next duel

  • Under 5 minutes: Connect Four or Mastermind โ€” a full match fits any break.
  • Classic duel (10โ€“20 minutes): Checkers or Battleship โ€” minute-long rules, constant tension.
  • Deep session (20+ minutes): Chess or Go โ€” bottomless games where every match teaches something.
  • Moving up: raise the difficulty only once you win comfortably. Losing narrowly teaches; losing by a landslide does not.
